Identification and damage

Pineus pini is an aphid that lives in colonies on the woody organs (stem, branches and branches) of host plants.
The adults are pinkish-orange in color, but are protected by a showy whitish waxy secretion that completely covers them; the affected wood organ looks like it is covered with a whitish encrustation, under which the Aphids live. The damage is determined by the bites of nutrition on the woody organs, with consequent deterioration and weakening, more or less serious depending on the infestations of the host plants. The heavily affected plants tend to strip their leaves, especially in the internal part of the crown and at the level of the branches directly and more intensely affected. Among other woolly aphids, one species, the Eopineus strobus, attacks only the Pine strobe.

Biological cycle

The Pineus pini winters:

  • in the adult female stage, on the Pine in case it performs an anolocycle on this plant;
  • in the unripe female stage, on Picea orientalis, if it carries out its typical dioecious cycle, between Picea orientalis (primary host) and species of the genus Pinus (secondary hosts); in this case the dioecious cycle is completed in two years.

Fight

The fight against Pineus pini is chemical.
It is performed only in case of actual need, in the presence of a strong infestation; especially in nurseries and production sites using products registered on the plants being treated. The interventions are performed at the end of winter, against wintering forms; normally several operations are performed every fortnight.
In case of heavy infestations it is advisable to repeat the interventions for a few years.
The products to be used are white oils activated by phosphorganics or pyrethroids with interventions that tend to wash the affected wood organs.
