Origin, classification and history

Origin: Finland.
F.C.I classification: Group 5 - spitz and primitive type dogs.

Given the latitude of the country of origin of the Lapland Reindeer Dog (Lapinporokoira - Lapponian Herder), the breed has developed in a completely unique way, has become of extraordinary resistance and with the ability to withstand very harsh climates. The breed has been alongside the Lapland herders for centuries, as sheep farming is one of Finland's main activities. His recognition by the International Federation took place recently. His figure is truly ancient and is now in the tradition of the Nordic peoples. The breed is practically unknown in continental Europe.

General aspect

Medium-small size spitz. It is longer and taller, rather dark in color, with straight ears. It has a powerful bone structure and vigorous musculature. Its construction never appears heavy. Its fur is suitable for the Arctic climate. Very well built with great structural and skeletal solidity.

It is a rather obedient race with good intelligence. He is very friendly, energetic and quite helpful. It is a breed particularly prone to barking. He becomes very attached to the family that looks after him and in particular to a person. During the work he is serious and attentive. It is extraordinarily reserved with strangers. He must never show any sign of aggression. He is extremely alert. Despite its small size, it is able to fight many wild animals of those areas.
