Spread and habitat

Native to North America, where two diverse populations live on the two coasts (Atlantic coast and Pacific coast). During the winter they migrate to the south, where couples form, which will return to the north to reproduce. It lives in areas rich in trees near ponds and marshy areas. It has been bred in captivity for a very long time.

Morphological characteristics

Sexual dimorphism is very evident.
The male has a head with white stripes on a black-green-blue background. The beak is orange-red. The chin strap is whitish and the brown breast dotted with white. Yellowish belly and hips. Green-blue back and wings. Yellow legs. In eclipse it loses most of the bright colors but maintains the same basic design.
Male size 47-51 cm.
The female has a dark brown homogeneous coat, lighter in the lower part of the body. White eye circle and chin strap. Beak and legs of yellowish-gray color
Female size 43-49 cm.

Nutrition and behavior

In nature it feeds on herbs, buds, insects and berries. It lays 15 to 20 eggs in nests made in rock cavities or ravines. the brooding lasts thirty days.
There are Caroline Ducks mutated in captivity completely white.
