Fall armyworms feed on over 80 plants species, but prefers grasses, including rye and wheat. This insect also frequently damages field crops, including alfalfa, barley, bermudagrass, buckwheat, clover, corn, oats, millet, sorghum, sugar beets, sudangrass and soybeans.
Occasionally, fall armyworm injures apple and peach trees, grapevines, and strawberry plants. WVU Extension Master Gardener training, typically offered through in-person courses organized by WVU Extension offices around the state, will once again be available online via Zoom sessions. Something we learned through this COVID-induced way of conducting our training is that many people found it very appealing and wanted to have the online training opportunity again this fall.
Some counties are starting to offer in-person sessions, but given the volatility of the COVID situation, the best approach is to have a hybrid platform. This is the best time to take preventative measures against this deadly disease.

Fayette County Master Gardeners’ Spring Fling
The Annual Bluegrass Flower and Vegetable Show is an opportunity for gardeners of all ages in Fayette and surrounding counties to learn, compete, see what others are growing successfully in this area, as well as to see how their gardening efforts rate in the competition. The annual show, now gearing up for its 9 h year, is a crowd pleaser. Blue Ribbons are awarded in categories for Youth, Horticulture and Design. No other show I know of has this range for entries — there is even a category for house plants — or, this many levels of judging expertise in one place.

Jamie Dockery and Fayette County's University of Kentucky extension office have been "growing community" for twelve years now. Dockery turned it into a curbside, drive through pick up. To make do with the current circumstances, lucky people today got to pick up their garden kits with with tomato plants, basil plants, seeds and more and all of the informational supplies provided for them in their own green bag. It was a huge hit. Come Monday, Dockery and his team will be brain storming those ideas and working on informational videos for folks at home seeing how green their thumb. For the time being, the Extension Office is taking phone calls and emails, but no in person visits. They are still there to answer any of your gardening or agricultural questions.
