Origin, diffusion and economic characteristics

Ancient German breed originated from the crossing of German chickens with Spanish chickens. The name means mountain hen with the crest folded. Similar to Menorca.
Rustic chicken, with good egg production (white-shelled).

Morphological characteristics

There are four varieties: black coat with double white spot, black coat with double yellow spot, uniformly black and perched.
Strong and wide head with simple crest straight in the rooster and typically bent in the hen. Brown red iris. White mumps and medium wattles. Rich cape. Very rich tail carried high. Strong legs.

Medium weight:
- Roosters 2.0 - 2.75 kg
- Hens 1.75 - 2.25 kg

I - GENERALITIES

Origin
Germany
Created in the Duchy of Berg in the early 18th century. Mainly based on local strains and the Canterino del Berg.

Country-style chicken, stocky, barely medium-high growth habit, quite high tail and well-fitting plumage to the body.

III - STANDARD
General appearance and characteristics of the breed

1- FORM
Trunk: common chicken shape, wide, solid and slightly inclined.
Head: broad and strong.
Beak: strong; black to light slate blue with dark apex.
Eyes: red to dark brown iris.
Crest: simple, straight and of a good medium size; not too deep indentation; well developed lobe that follows the line of the nape without leaning on it. In the hen folded on one side, in the back that now folds on one side then on the other.
Bargigli: medium length and well rounded.
Face: red; with some tiny feathers.
Mumps: medium sized; elliptical, pure white.
Neck: short, abundant cape.
Broad shoulders.
Back: medium length that narrows a little towards the back. Croup with abundant plumage.
Wings: long, high and tightly held to the body.
Tail: richly developed which forms an obtuse angle but quite high capacity; numerous sickles. In the hen carried open.
Chest: wide, full and carried low.
Legs: strong and slightly spread. Medium length tarsi; color according to the variety. Well spread fingers.
Belly: full and deep.

Serious defects:
Very short back; habit too high; tail too vertical or too low; straight ridge in the hen; very red in the mumps.

3 - PLUMAGE
Conformation: full, wide and well glued to the body.

IV - COLORS

BLACK TASSELLED SILVER
COCK
Black head. Cape and silver-white rump with light black edge and tip, which appears sooty, without black flames. Silver white back more or less mixed with black. Silver white shoulders and small wing covers with a light sooty edge. Primary and secondary remiges with white external beards with light black edging, internal gray-black beards. Large coverts of white wings with black coarse hemming that form two or three wing bands. Black chest with slightly marked, even hidden, rounded design on the sides (black feather with white tip inside). Legs and belly black. Pure black tail with green reflections.
HEN
Black head. Black cape, rump, tail and abdominal parts; white flames in the lower part of the cape and slight peppering of the big tail coverts allowed. Shoulders and upper part of the back with rounded irregular shape. Black breast with more or less rounded white design on the sides. External beards of white primary and secondary remiges with light black edging, internal gray-black beards. Large coverts of the white wings with coarse black edging that forms the two wing bands.
Dark slate gray tarsi.
Serious Defects: plumage without brilliance; completely white silver feathers with black apex; black flames in the cape and on the back; white throat; presence of white on the tail.

BLACK TASSELLED GOLD
GALLO and GALLINA
Background color and arrangement of the design as in the Black Tassellata Silver variety, but the gold color, up to golden brown, replaces large.
Slate gray tarsi.
Serious Defects: as for the Black Tassellata Silver variety; floury tracks.

BLACK
GALLO and GALLINA
Pure black with strong green highlights.
Dark slate gray tarsi.
Serious Defects: opaque plumage; feathers of other color.

SPARVIERO
GALLO and GALLINA
Each feather crossed crosswise in multiple alternation of black and gray-blue, the bars are slightly arched. Bars of the same width in the rooster, while in the hen the black bars are clearly wider than the clear ones. The drawing is not precise. Dimly designed down jacket.
Tarsi as dark flesh colored as possible.
Serious Defects: completely shaded sparrowhawk design; total absence of the sparrowhawk design in the helmsmen and sickles; too white in sickle cell.
